A curfew has been declared by the army in Beirut, after fierce clashes in the university quarter of the Lebanese capital. Violence spilled onto the streets following a dispute between pro and anti- government supporters at the Arab University in the south of the city.
Security forces were deployed with armoured vehicles during efforts to separate the mobs. At least four people were killed and more than 20 were wounded. The fighting started when youths threw stones and attacked cars. Later gunmen open fire from rooftops. In reply soldiers fired into the air. As night fell, the violence spread to Shi’ite and Sunni neighbourhoods nearby.
Appeals for calm were made by leaders on both sides of the political divide in Lebanon, including one from Hizbollah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah who called on followers to get off the streets.
